Where to go?
Health care in the Bahamas is generally viewed as being of a high quality, irrespective of the fact that certain aspects of the healthcare system may be flawed. Many of our medical staff members have received their training and expertise in the United States, Canada, or Europe. The medical facilities are equipped with cutting-edge technology. The Bahamas’ healthcare system, consisting of both public and private facilities, offers access to one of the Caribbean region’s most effective healthcare systems.
There are three public hospitals in The Bahamas — The Princess Margaret Hospital, Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, both on the island of New Providence, and the Rand Memorial Hospital on the island of Grand Bahama. All three hospitals offer state-of-the-art facilities, and the quality of care is regarded as being of a good standard. The Bahamas also has two private hospitals, both of which are located on the island of New Providence:
- Lyford Cay Medical Facility — Lyford Cay Hospital, which also houses the Bahamas Heart Institute, offers general medical treatment as well as specialist services in gynecology, family practice, and internal medicine.
- Doctors Hospital — Doctors Hospital provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services and has a satellite facility called Doctors Hospital West which is located at the western end of New Providence. The hospital promotes itself as “the most modern acute care privately owned healthcare facilities in the Caribbean” with “more than 200 highly skilled and dedicated physicians” on staff. It has been accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) since 2010.
These private hospitals provide both routine and urgent care as well as more advanced treatment for patients suffering from severe ailments. Additionally, persons can access private walk-in clinics, practitioners, and medical offices in the Bahamas.
Access to public health care services is generally free of charge, regardless of one’s financial situation. It is advisable, however, that individuals who intend to live in the Bahamas purchase health insurance to access private medical services. Private medical care can be exceptionally expensive without health insurance. Basic medical insurance should include international coverage as travel to the USA may be necessary for specialized treatments.
Ambulance services, fire services, and police services can all be reached via 919, 411, and 911 respectively in the event of a serious medical emergency.
